New Piano Market Statistics: Inside the Quiet Transformation of Piano Playing

For those of us who spend our lives on the bench — whether teaching, practicing for a recital, or simply playing for the love of it – the piano has always been a singular concept: wood, felt, strings, and soul. I wonder if there's enough interest for its own thread though?

Anyway this is probably the core work (the performer has a separate lecture video on the work)

This was my own first encounter with this stuff (I played some at uni). 'Makrokosmos' is of course the opposite of Bartok's Mikrokosmos, but if I remember rightly the idea of 12 pieces came from Debussy's Preludes. He wrote 4 volumes (this is V1)

And this is a more recent find, a Native American (Mohawk) composer who studied with Cage (this is her YT channel if you want to hear more of her works)

Rzewski - Variations on "The People United Will Never be Defeated." I wouldn't call it an "extended technique" piece, though there is a fair bit of it sprinkled in so I'd say it counts.

Maybe in this case best to pinpoint the variations that use extended technique?

And can't believe I forgot this one. Probably the extended technique piece to come closest to standard repertoire (maybe because you can't hear said extended technique?)

Do re-tuned pianos count?

Interesting! Also not sure if it counts as extended technique but definitely think this kind of stuff belongs in this thread regardless. I'll listen to the other movements later. I did a quick search for more info on the tunings used and found them on a piano technician's forum (though they don't seem to approve)

Exploring Lachenmann a bit lately. This one isn't for piano, but for cello. Since the original thread allows for non-piano music, I'd say it counts.

Insane that some of those sounds can even be made on a cello. I wonder if some of them are specific to cello or if they work on violin and viola as well.
