xx Learning WTC 1 C minor prelude
April 17, 2009, 09:46:20 PM by peterl

My teacher is using a method I've never come up against before - I was wondering if this is a traditional way to teach this prelude.

After a couple or weeks of standard HS practice she told me to put the hands together - but with the metronome at 40 to the sixteenth note (that's a semiquaver to non-US folks)!  Only once I can match this beat throughout the whole piece (and that's 38x16 = 608 beats = 15 minutes) will I be allowed to start to speed up.  I'm having trouble staying awake, much less matching the metronome for 15 minutes straight.

Has anyone encountered this form of torture practice with this piece, or any other?

xx Bach Prelude and Fugue in C minor WTC book1
January 22, 2009, 12:51:59 AM by tonyyyy

I am just starting to work at this, hands separate so far. The only part which concerns meis  the presto section of the prelude - I dont know if I will succeed in playing it at double the speed of the previous part

I have read this useful analysis http://www-personal.umich.edu/~siglind/wtc-i-02.htm
The usual choice of tempo seems to be...

Quote
Presto = twice as fast as the main section;
translation: 2 bars in bars 1-27 = 1 bar in bars 28-33
Adagio = twice as slow as the main section;
translation: 1 bar in bars 28-33 = 1 eighth-note in bar 34
Allegro = back to the original tempo
translation: 1 eighth-note in bar 34 = 1 quarter-note in bars 35-38.
She suggests the alternative....
Quote
Another option assumes a 2:3 proportion between the outer sections on the one hand and the Presto–Adagio on the other hand. While this option does not maintain the balanced structure mentioned above, it allows a simpler transition into the fugue. (Approximate metronome settings: (a) beginning beat = 72, Presto = 144, Adagio = 36, Allegro = 72; (b) beginning beat = 88, Presto = 132, Adagio = 66, Allegro = 88.

Anyone have suggestions about this or any other issues in the piece?

Im sure the fugue will have its moments when i start to put hands together Undecided

xx Bach P&F c minor BK I
December 27, 2007, 09:32:40 PM by pianogeek_cz

Please try not to cringe too audibly, the piano is getting tuned soon... Roll Eyes
Nah, it's a work edition, especially the fugue.

Recorded on my brand new Zoom H4. (Yay!) Might need turning the volume up a bit.

Constructive criticism is very much welcome.

Hey,

Would anyone mind sharing the fingering they use for the right hand during the Presto?

I have been trying to figure one out myself to no avail.

Thanks.

xx Synchronizing Hands in Bach -- e.g. WTC BK I prelude No. 2 c minor
October 20, 2006, 03:31:37 PM by glk

Hi:

Based on a thoughtful comment I received in the Audition Room -- see http://www.pianostreet.com/smf/index.php/topic,21317.0.html
I'd appreciate suggestions for improving the synchronization of my hands in playing
intricate or symmetrical passage work.  My own thought has been to
practice slowly, with different rhythms, and then with metronome at increasing speed.
I also try HS, especially if I can tell which hand is lagging and needs to be solidified.

Suggestions for a more efficient or alternative approach?  Thanks.

Gary K

xx Bach Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I: Preludes And Fugues, II. C. Minor
April 25, 2006, 10:55:56 AM by atticus

Hi all,

I am playing the Fugue in C Minor (three voices), Book 1, WTC.  Are there any tips for bringing out the middle voice?  This is often played with the top voice in the right hand and it gets lost in my playing...

Thanks,
atticus

xx Bach Fugue In C Minor - Things To Know For Exam?
December 13, 2005, 01:19:22 PM by fuel925

In November I will be taking the Grade 8 exam. One of the pieces I am learning for this exam is Bach's Fugue In C Minor from Book 1 of the WTC. What things do you think I need to know about this piece, in the event the examiner asks me questions about it? Remember its Grade 8, not Diploma level so I don't need to go to a really technical level. Any tips would be helpful.

PS. I already know about the analysis at this site: http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~tas3/wtc.html but I think it is too in-depth for this grade, and I don't really understand what it's harping on about anyway!

"All of my students are members of Pianostreet and many of my teacher colleagues have joined as well.
It is an excellent resource for students and teachers alike and there is very rarely any need to visit another website or music store in search of sheet music."

"As a frequent user of pianostreet.com I find it easy to navigate, great value for money and very professional. The pieces are all well-graded and the audio is really useful, especially for pieces not heard before. I have recommended the site to many of my friends who play the piano. Keep up the good work."

Dr. Robert J Keane, pianist

"I was in Poland the past summer to give 2 concerts. At the last minute they requested some Chopin, which I had not brought with me. So, I google-searched for classical downloads and found your site. I was able to print out excellent editions of the pieces I needed within minutes. To find the scores locally would have been inpossible as it was a smaller town, the nearest music store 45 minutes away."

Robert York, pianist
Long Beach, California

"Piano Street has been a wonderful tool to me as both a pianist and a piano teacher. I can browse the collection for pieces I want to play and/or have my students play. The difficulty rating system that Piano Street uses enables me to search by difficulty level for pieces at my students' various playing levels. It is helpful that many of the scores include an audio clip of the piece being played. I have recommended to my advanced students that they also join Piano Street since getting sheet music from there is a much less expensive alternative to ordering and paying for the music.
