xx Alkan's Sonata and Liszt's Sonata: Similarities
August 28, 2010, 05:46:15 AM by orangesodaking

There are some similarities between the second movement of Alkan's Grande Sonate Op. 33 (1846) and Liszt's Sonata in B Minor S. 178 (1853). I explored these and made a video comparing some parts I found similar.

I'm not saying Liszt totally ripped Alkan, but I am fairly certain that these are not coincidences.

Enjoy!

xx Two Big Sonatas
April 14, 2010, 01:30:47 AM by chopianist123

I was wondering, in your opinions is Beethoven's Hammerklavier Sonata or Liszt's Sonata in B Minor more difficult to tackle technically? How about Musically?

Which of these two great sonatas do u prefer personally?

Thanks for your answers.

xx Liszt Sonata in B minor - HELP ME PLEASE
July 14, 2009, 01:09:44 PM by fenz

I'm learning Liszt Sonata in B minor now. The term 'non legato' in bars 240 and 255 confused me. Is it mean that the right hand in bars 240 until 254 and the left hand in bars 255 until 276 play 'a little staccato' (sorry, I don't know exactly term of that)? And how about bar 277? Is the right hand play legato again or still non legato?

Thanks for your help,

I just read this blog by Stephen Hough. Quite interesting! Not sure I agree though ...

xx Fingering in Liszt Sonata Passage
November 10, 2008, 07:02:17 AM by jbb

I think anyone studying this piece will have a different section that is most difficult for him or her.  For me, I found the alternating arpeggio section beginning at m. 40 to be elusive in terms of the left hand.  I see several alternatives for the fingering:

   E D B G E D B G E (or B A F# D B A F# D B)
   1 2 3 5 1 2 3 5 3
   1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 3

or, take the first E with the RH chord (BGE played with 542), then play the D with the thumb of the right hand and the LH arpeggio as:

   B G E D B G E
   1 2 4 1 2 4 5

I find the first (1235) difficult because my pinky is somewhat short, the second a bit of an uncomfortable stretch (particularly for the second arpeggio) and the last the most comfortable but am concerned with the break in the RH.

I'm curious as to what people here who mastered this passage have used.

I can offer the hint that in the passage that follows beginning at m. 51, it's much easier (at least for me, to get all the notes to sound consistently) to take the first note of each group of eight RH notes with the left hand.

xx Liszt Sonata
March 04, 2008, 05:23:43 AM by ralessi

Hey all! Been a while since I have been around, hope everyone's holiday season was a good one.  Anyway, I have been out of school for a while, which has given me some great "me" time, and I have started working on the Liszt sonata.  Saying starting working on the sonata actually does not even begin to describe what I did.  I COMPLETELY immersed myself in the piece collecting any recordings possible, reading the wonderful "Liszt Sonata in B minor" book, any analysis of the piece I could find (which weren't many), and really just ANYTHING I could find about the piece of music.  It truly is one of the greatest/most important pieces of music written, given all of the circumstances.  Anyway, does anyone have anything on the piece at all they would be willing to share with me? Only finding 1 good analysis accompanied by a few articles and things really is uncool and I want so much more than what I have.  Anything at all would be so greatly appreciated.  Another question that I have is; Does anyone know of a publishing of the piece with Liszt's own marking/fingerings? Thanks for any help!

Cheers!
Rick
