| The Prelude Op. 32, No. 9 was composed by Rachmaninoff on August 26, 1910. The right hand melody in this piece occurs in snipets, but there are two other levels of writing, e.g., accompaniment also within the right hand, and the left hand octaves, using the first page of the score as an example. The texture of the piece is quite thick, so typical of Rachmaninoff's idiom. Rachmaninoff never admitted to "programs" in his preludes, but Op. 32, No. 9 makes me think of a ship in large ocean swells. The entire set of 13 preludes premiered at Princess Lieven's "Prison Concerts" in Moscow. I recorded this piece at home on my Baldwin Model L grand. |
