The first set of Liebeslieder had been a great financial success for Brahms and his publisher.
By popular demand, he produced a new set, again with the texts for the vocal quartet from Georg Friedrich Daumerâs âPolydora,â free translations from world poetry. This time, however, Brahms adds an epilogue from the greatest German poet, Goethe. Seven of the songs are for solo voice, as opposed to two in the Op. 52 set. The version for piano duet alone was published against Brahmsâs wishes.
