Most of the works here are from Scriabinâs early years and therefore show little of the advanced and forward-looking compositional features that began to appear in his piano output in the first years of the 20th century.
The two Mazurkas, Op. 40, appeared in the remarkably productive year of 1903 (Preludes Opp. 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, Etudes Op. 42, Piano Sonata No. 4, Symphony No. 3 etc). Yet they show little of the tortured and dark side of the composer explored in many of his other piano works from this period.
