Ellmenreich (1816-1905) was more notable as an actor and singer than as a composer. He spent 50 years on the stage and almost none on the podium. Still, his very few songs have some merit, particularly because of their gruff good humor. He was a 19th-century road actor and musician, playing Hamburg, Mannheim, Frankfurt, Altenburg, and Schwerin, among others. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he lived a long life and was 89 when he died.
