Thalberg Fantasy on Rossini's "Moses in Egypt" : VIDEO
on: September 03, 2006, 10:21:37 AM

A few memory slips (had some trouble remembering the start!), but anyway, feel free to take a look and comment.

For a shorter version, second half only (I'm happier with this part of the performance than the first, as well as I think it's the better part of the composition):

Sorry if the audio is not of CD quality, but I won't get a CD transfer of it for a few months.

EDIT: I have now received and posted the CD audio version, further down in the thread.

Amazing! Superb :) It was great, very proffesional. so nice of you to play such a neglected piece. The arpeggios in the 2nd half were particulary impressive. :D

Thanks. It's one of those pieces that is not "serious" music, but nonetheless I think it's well-written and effective (the audience certainly liked it!), and deserves to be heard a bit more than it actually is.

The arpeggio section was fun to play :)

Well, I finally have the cd recording of this as opposed to the low quality audio on the youtube video, so here it is (if anyone is interested in such obscure music :D )

Fantastic playing - technically _and_ musically! I didn't know the piece before. You give a great example to me how far an amateur can come (well, probably with lots of talent and work). And it's also a good motivation for looking in more detail at the off-mainstream literature. Congratulation!

Thank you! I suppose that one of the nicest things about not being a professional pianist is that when I do get the chance to play in public, I don't feel any obligation to play mainstream repertoire - just music that I enjoy and which I hope an audience will also appreciate.

wow.  i never heard this piece either.  you put a lot of effort into the interpretation which helps the listener out a lot.  i love it!

Thank you :) For me, one of the nice points about playing such obscure music is that you have a lot more interpretative freedom than you would with, say, a Beethoven sonata - and while it's not as deep musically, it is interesting to work out how to approach certain aspects of the piece. For example, the last five minutes or so are effectively a theme and variations - imo of considerable pianistic ingenuity - and it was a lot of fun playing around with the presentation of the material.

While there are certainly areas of improvement that could be made to the playing, I'm glad to see the music being so well received.

Incredible piece, incredible performance. I don't suppose anyone could upload the sheet music?

Good luck with it - I found the vast majority of it to be very pianistic and that there were few really unpleasant passages. Of course it's not easy, but I think it's one of those pieces that gives the effect of sounding harder than it is - it is certainly very enjoyable to play.

Yeah, I'm flicking through it at the moment - parts of it look pretty nasty, but on the whole it seems reasonable. Those last few pages are incredible, hahaha.
