Scales - Find All the Piano Chords You Need - Part 1
on: October 21, 2006, 09:14:58 PM
The purpose of these scales are for the convenience of the composers to find the chords they need faster in a harmonical way. Each measure represents a complete chord scattered on running notes for both directions.

Part 1 includes all the basic chords (major, minor, diminish and augment) with root and inverted configurations.

I will work on dominant 7, half-diminish 7, major 7, minor 7 and more in the future.

Part 2 includes - Dominant 7 (C E G Bb) and Minor Natural 6 (C Eb G A).

Minor Natural 6 is essentially the same chord as Half Diminished 7 (C Eb Gb Bb) with different inverted configurations.

The reason I group Dominant 7 and Minor Natural 6 - because they are the mirror-imaged chords. The symmetries are important because the roots of the 4 different Dominant 7 make a Minor Natural 6.

4 Dominant configurations using C key for the primary octave

C Dominant 7 (C E G Bb C)
F Dominant 7 (C Eb F A C)
D Dominant 7 (C D F# A C)
Ab Dominant 7 (C Eb Gb Ab C)

(C D F Ab) is a Minor Natural 6 rooted on F key.

Minor 6 is essentially the same chord as Major 7 (C E G B) with different inverted configurations.

These chords are used most often by the contemporary musicians.

Part 4 includes - Major Flat 6 (C E G Ab) and Minor Natural 7 (C Eb G B).

Major Flat 6 also has a common name - Augment Major.

Minor Natural 7 also has a common name - Augment Minor.

These chords are usually used for the themes of the ranger and sci-fi movies.

Part 5 includes - Major 2 (C D E G) and Minor 4 (C Eb F G).

Again these two chords are the reflective compliments on the two sides of the mirrors.

Part 6 includes - Major 4 (C E F G) and Minor 2 (C D Eb G).

The modulations are somewhat different from one measure to the next comparing to the scales in the previous parts because the chords in part 6 only work the best if they swing back and forth as if the light beams are descending unto the ground level like what happened in the mythology movies.

Part 7 includes - Major Sharp 4 (C E F# G) and Minor Flat 2 (C Db Eb G).

The two chords list above have been used only in the theme songs of some movies and Chopin's Polanaise collections + Fantasie Impromptu. The moods feel quiet fantasy for the pieces when these chords are used.

Part 8  includes - Major Flat 2 (C Db E G) and Minor Sharp 4 (C Eb F# G).

Major Flat 2 often appears during the downstreams in the Middle Eastern songs.
Minor Sharp 4 can be found inside several measures of Chopin's Etude Revolutionaire.

Part 9 includes - 3 unique types of dual fourth chords: (C F Bb C), (C F B C) and (C F# B C).

An additional section of chord practices was attached on the end.

Thanks sissco for the wonderful feedbacks.

Part 11 includes - (C D F G) and (C Eb E G).

(C D F G) and (C Eb F Bb) are essentially the same chord with different inverted configuration. (C Eb E G) is the only type of primary chord that is both a major and a minor.

(C E F Bb) and (C D F# G) are the same chord with different inverted configurations.
(C E F# B) and (C Db F G) are the same chord with different inverted configurations.

These collections of chords only appear in the compositions of Liszt and Rachmaninoff, probably the hardest sets of chords on the piano.

These diminished chords are often used for the transition phrases in the Beethoven Sonatas.

Part 15 includes - (C Db E F) and (C Db F Gb).

Is the first page of Chopin's Heroic Polanaise really hard? No, it'll be much easier if you have practiced part 15 a hundred times already.

Part 16 includes - (C D E F) and (C Db Eb F).

These chords are more of the common types which you may raise the secondary or tertiary notes an octave higher to generate the contemporary feels.

Part 17 includes - (C D Eb F) and (C D E F#).

These chords are similar to the ones in part 16. Except the chords in part 17 are minors and augments instead of majors.

These chords are very uncommon and perhaps can only be found inside a few of the dark themed movies.

Part 19 includes - (C D F), (C Eb F), (C E F), (C Db F) and (C C# D).

These chords, which are the common fragments from the previous parts, may provide the composers of how to use the partial chords instead of the full chords.

These chords are again the partial chords. They can be used to reconstruct new full chords that were found in the previous parts.

Final Part includes - (C D F#), (C E F#) and (C Eb F# A C).

These chords have the characters of simplity and easy memorable.

The whole scale sets which includes 21 parts can be placed on a circle and they will have the close relations from the adjacent parts (including Final Part and Part 1).
