The Universal Mind of Bill Evans
on: February 13, 2009, 06:02:33 PM
This film of Bill Evans being interviewed by his brother is a fascinating look inside a remarkable musical mind. There's a lot wisdom and good advice here, and it's not just about jazz, although that is it's focus. Watch all five parts  :)

It's enlightening, indeed.  Bill Evans is one of the most harmonically interesting Jazz pianists of the century.  Gould called him the Scriabin of Jazz. Love Bill Evans.

Another interesting Bill Evans related series from an interview with Margaret Marian McPartland. It clashes a bit when they play together but if you´re a fan you will probably like this. The reflection in D by Bill Evans solo from that disc is really something.
here´s the overdubbed version of the same song 1978.

I'd noticed this Piano Jazz interview but didn't watch it until today. He's so self effacing and modest for a living legend, which he was. Some writers say he had an inferiority complex but I don't get that from his tone of voice and manner of speaking, he's just straightforward and logical, almost frighteningly so. Just a humble person aware of his place, without letting it go to his head. Quite refreshing.

"Reflections in D" is beautiful, as always.

Wow, thanks for the reminder.  I quite needed that fix last night.  Evans is... well, superb.  He takes me into areas that are impossible to describe...
