Section of improvisation from last year
on: May 19, 2005, 10:11:12 AM
I seem to be going the opposite way to most people. I started off very structured when young but as I get through middle-age my playing is getting wilder and madder. This is on my old piano and recorded on too high a volume, but it will have to do until I get the hang of my new piano and make something better.

loved it. definately 'wild and mad', but i'd still say it has structure. i guess you might call it a more "naturally evolving" structure - which i think is something that's inevitable when you've been playing from intuition over a long period of time.
there weren't any sections which struck me as sounding out of place while i was listening to it.
would you say your playing is just less structured on a micro - rather than macro - level?

Organic, rather than architectural form is exactly what I feel to be appropriate for my musical purpose. This was not the case until a few years ago. Your response reassures me that this is, after all, discernible by the listener, and that my retarded adolescence may be a postive musical force. Thanks for listening.

Yes I agree, you are on to something here Ted! kinda has a "futuristic baroque" feel, if that can possibly make any sense :)

maybe one of these days I'll get up the nerve to post one of my free improvisations.
