Okay, first u must be specific of what university you want to get in. Requirements for undergraduate course in piano conservatories or undergraduate degrees course may vary. If you are thinking universities like Julliard, Yale, or Peabody, their entry repertoire requirements are way above ur typical grade 8 ABRSM grade 8, you will be expected to be able to play pieces such as Chopin sonatas and Ballades, more difficult Beethoven Sonatas ( particulary the later period ) , and that is before you actually start the undergraduate course. And their audition programmer is normally at least 40 minutes long. I think you can forget about even attempting it.
On some of the lesser prestigious institutions, the entry level is much lower, I'm assuming you will try for these. Before we can help you, can you tell us what is the audition requirements and what are the pieces you are preparing. And regarding technical studies, it is best to consult your teacher about this, learning technical studies on your own without proper guidance may result in disastrious playing habits.
Your grade does not really matter in an audition. Nobody is going to ask you what grade you are. But the most important thing is about your musicality and ability to perform at the level of the audition, and I can tell you that will be beyond any grade. I personally have an ABRSM grade 7 practical myself. I am going to try for an audition next January for an undergraduate course. I have been preparing and working hard to improve my techniques and musicality and now I am preparing my audition pieces though its still months away, and the pieces I am going to play is no joke, example, Lavapies from Albeniz's Iberia Suite. But you have to play really difficult and musical pieces to ensure your place in a prestigious undergraduate course.
You can private message me or just post here the uni you are going to and the details of the requirement, and your audition repertoire. I will try my best to help you.
