The what are you working on right now topic
on: June 28, 2005, 04:05:45 AM
What piece(s) are you seriously working on right now?

Right now, I'm seriously working on Rach 2 and Liszt's 2nd Hungarian Rhapsody

For fun I'm working on some Brahms Intermezzi and some of Prokofiev's Fugitive Visions

Ravel- Le Tombeau de Couperin
Rachmaninoff- Etudes-Tableaux in F-sharp Minor, Op. 39 No. 3

Liszt- Mephisto Waltz
Chopin- Ballade No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 52
Rachmaninoff- Concerto No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 30 "Allegro ma non tanto"
Schubert- The Erlkonig  ;D

Keep in mind I know three of these very well and am just learning the others.

You're from Winston-Salem? You don't study at NCSA by any chance, do you?

/off topic

I'm working on:
Beethoven - op. 111 sonata
Chopin - scherzo no. 3
Chopin - nocturne 27/1 (c# minor)
Mozart, K330 and K332 (re-learning old sonatas for fun)
Bach - E major P&F, Bk. II

Since it's summer, I don't have regular lessons so I'm pretty much doing fun stuff on my own. Tons of sight reading - Mozart, Scarlatti, Beethoven sonatas, Shostakovich P&Fs. Op. 111 is my one 'serious' piece which I've been working on for a while now.

17. Mostly that is college audition rep. plus a concerto and the erlkonig because they're both kick ass.

barber nocturne

poulenc trois pieces

both are still terrible.  i dread my resuming of lessons (esp. after vacation).  must work harder.  don't impress my teacher yet YET.  but, i will resume my memory work and connect with the serious side of myself.

why do my parents and relatives think i need not practice to play well?  and, then suffering undue adulation, play for my teacher to dull stares and fidgeting (looks at watch, up at ceiling, excuses himself to use the bathroom).  i must impress my teacher.  i must make him lean forward with itnerest and say 'play it again.  it sounds so good.'  or, 'what else do you have for me?'  someday, this will be all i hear
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

Are those the Moskowsky Etudes from his Op 72? If it is, Do you really like that octave etude?

And just to keep on topic, I'm currently learning from scratch Chopin's 2nd Scherzo and after this Saturday, you can add a prelude and fugue from a WTC, and a Beethoven Sonata.

Ravel ~ Jeau d'Eaux
Chopin ~ All of the Etudes
Grieg ~ A minor concerto

... While I'm at it, I'm also looking for a fairly challenging Bach piece (the above list should give you some idea where I'm at) that I could play with the Ravel for my adjudications this spring. I've been looking through Book One of his Preludes and Fugues, but I'm not finding too much to spark my interest, and I don't own Book Two. Those are the only works of his I own.

Advice on a good piece to learn?

Some Chopin etudés, Czerny etudés, and Scarlatti sonatas. Schumann's PC. Vladigerov's Humoresque (the longer one). I was supposed to play something else during the summer, too, but I have such a bad memory... I think I have Partita by Rautavaara. It's not a difficult piece, but I have to study some Finnish music.

Bach Fugue in C sharp Major
Chopin Etude op 25 # 12
--my teacher wants me to play some crazy crazy piece by a guy named Kapustin I think...look him up and find his sonata forget which one but it's the last movement.  It's so awesome and sounds jazzy, but it's more difficult than most pieces I've seen.  My teacher dl'd it off EMULE so you could probly find it somewhere.  It's insane so fast!!  I'm doin it as slow as about 1 page a week not up to speed, but It's so incredible!!

Rachmaninov - Etudes Tableaux op 39, no. 3 and 8

Revising (well supposedly):

Mozart Sonata in D (K576)
Ravel Alborada del gracioso

Learning/sight reading/not really comitting to in great detail/still deciding on:

Berg Piano sonata op 1
Chopin Ballade no 4
Beethoven Moonlight sonata
"Mozart makes you believe in God - it cannot be by chance that such a phenomenon arrives into this world and then passes after 36 yrs, leaving behind such an unbounded no. of unparalled masterpieces"
