What else could i learn?
on: June 26, 2003, 07:55:19 PM
my rep:
schumann phantasiestucke
mozart's fantasy dminor
" " adagio bminor
mozart piano concerto in A Major no.23
bach 18 short preludes
bach 25 inventions
beethoven sonata op.27 no2 all three movements
romance -sibelius
scherzo-mendelssohn
rach prelude c#minor ( gminor -memorizing)
chopin ballade op.23(wow that coda is a killer!
)-memorizing
chopin waltz c# minor,a-minor and some other easy ones
chopin etude #3 op.10, etc.
so what other peices should i learn and not a concerto i think that i will take other peoples advice and do those in 12th grade. i was thinking of islamey but then again that is really hard i have herd, i can sight read it through reallllllllllllllly slow but i don't know. any comments would be helpful.
and could someone give me a general idea of what level i am at. the peices i mentioned above are concert ready my teacher said and i feel the same except for the ones i'm memorizing!
David King- Thank You All In Advance!
oh yeah Joe Townley when you were younger what did you do to gain the technique to play rach's 3rd concerto? just asking i don't plan on playing it anytime soon.

also right now i am looking at chopin's sonata number 1 op.4 and i sight read the first movement and about 2 pages of the others and i don't think that it is hard technique wise..ah maybe music wise. what do you guys (and gals) think, my teacher said that it is hard but i can do it and i just wanted more info from other pianists. why do people think that this peice is very technical, there are some spots but every peice has their hard spots. i don't know i really wanna do the peice but so many people say thats its soo technical, from what i have done is my technique good enough for the peice or not? :-/

Hmm, how do you feel about adding some contemporary music to your collection? There are several works by Bartok for solo piano that are delightful...

Im guessing those Bach preludes are not WTK preludes. WTK is considered standard repertoire. Check out the prelude/fuge sets from WKT1: C minor is well known, D major is nice, as is G major. Then you can go to the Toccatas (e minor and c minor BTW914 and 911 respectively).
Barber's Ballade is a nice piece too for 20th century.
No Chopin Preludes?
Id also think about adding another sonata (Beethoven or other) to your list. Op 27 No 2 is very well known, but like my teacher says it has the same problem that Op.13 does: every potential judicator for competitions or auditions has probably played it or heard it since they were very young and has his/her own particular bias as to how it should be played. That will probably influence their assesment of your performance. Personally I think it also suffers from what happens when you hear a song on the radio for the 500th time that day, the first movement in particular, all of which go against you because you really have to make it a very special performance.
Why is your teacher not making recommendations as to what to start next?
