Poll

What is better for a black piano: satin finish or polish?

Satin is better for most homes--all that shine can be just too much
Polish is better--satin makes me feel like something's missing
Black is black--this isn't really a consideration for me
Whatever goes better with my furniture
whatever's cheaper
Gloss for Fazioli and Bosendorfer, Satin for Steinway or Mason and Hamlin
Polish for concerts, satin for homes
I have satin and I regret it
I have polished and I regret it
It just doesn't make sense to me that there's a price difference between these two

I have polished and I regret it.  It just collects dust so much more efficiently than a wood or satin finish.  Also, a scratch is so much more noticable.

i picked satin (didn't know about the dust on glossy) because it looks more 'comfortable.'  just like a home that's a little bit lived in.  you sit down and are not scared to sit with jeans.  of course, i don't even have a grand piano.

i have a kawaii studio upright (which i love!!!) it has a satin finish.

the solution to dust is to buy or make a cover.  that way, your strings don't get dusty too.  my old french piano prof. was very particular about the school pianos at university of alaska and kept as many as he could in good condition by telling his students that (after practicing) he expected them to shut the lids, and put the covers on.  am dismayed now, when i see perfectly good pianos get destroyed in a year or less (school pianos) just because it is thought that noone will do this.  college students aren't highschool students - and i think they can handle the responsiblity (do i sound like a mom?)

ok. another pet peeve is that practice rooms  and some music halls have absolutely no decoration (bland colors - usually white).  since the art depts are usually close by, why don't they cooperate with each other and have music students play during art exhibits, and art students come and do a few art murals on the blank walls.  just an idea.
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

OK, there's an idiot in this thread who doesn't know what the hell the difference is between gloss and satin.

That idiot is me.

Someone care to enlighten me?

Its the sound that matters

I'd like to add that for you, Tash--unfortunately I don't know how to change it now that it's created.

Wald--the difference between gloss and satin...

Well, gloss or polish refers to those pianos that have so much shine you can see a perfect reflection of yourself in them.  Very Very Shiney.  Satin pianos are more of a dull black--you can't even begin to see your reflection.    Most pianos offer these two options, and the shiney one is more expensive.

Of course sound is important, but this thread is about color.  It's supposed to be lighthearted.  You are welcome to start a thread about sound--of course, the folks in the instruments category will want to participate, so you may want to start it there.  I would have started this one there, but I thought it was rather frivolous and more appropriate to a miscellaneous type of place.

Thanks, I get it now.

In that case, I much prefer the gloss/polish finish on pianos, but they do have a higher affinity for fingerprints and dust. :(

This is just me, but if I have a choice between shiny or not I'll choose the less shiny... Somehow I figure that being too shiny is flashy - trying to impress with dazzle, perhaps the polished piano is trying to compensate for something?

So yeah, I trust the satin piano to be more honest with me.
