Getting a new Student!
on: July 11, 2003, 01:13:42 AM
Hey everyone! I'm excited to report that I will be getting a new student! Since I am a beginning teacher I am really excited (not that all of you wouldn't be). This student, however, is older and more experienced than my other students (who are beginnings under 9 years old). She is 12 and has had four years of experience. She has been using the Bastien books with her previous teacher and I use Faber and Faber. What are the difference between these two series? Would it be beneficial to switch her .. or contine with the Bastein? THanks for all your imput.;

How about waiting a couple lessons before you decide?  If she's using Bastien literature books and reading well, playing with good expression - I'd probably start moving her into literature and away from method books.  If she's struggling with reading, it could very well be from the early postional, heavily finger notated Bastien method.  In that case, you may need to do some remedial work.  I would get her into the Faber series immediately and work hard on the note-reading skills.

Since I am such a fan of Faber and Faber, I would definitely switch her. Just explain why you prefer Faber and Faber over Bastien (there are tons of good reasons!) and she and her parents will appreciate your not just "going with the flow" but doing what you feel is best for her.
