Truely a beginner.
on: July 21, 2005, 02:15:20 AM
I'm kind of embarrased to ask this being that the postings on this forum seem so advanced. but I really want to learn the piano.
Does any one have any suggestions on how I can learn the piano scale? I have a hard time remembering. I can go CDEFGABC. But to remember CBAGFEDC and skipping notes: like C-A-F, as an example. My fingers fumble. I would like to add I am trying to learn the piano on my own. So if any one has any suggestions on how I can accomplish this on my own please HELP! Thank you

Ther's no need to remember CBAGFEDC. All you have to do is remember where to place your thumb and what fingers to cross over.
the fingering:
C - 1 *
D - 2
E - 3
F - 1 *
G - 2
A - 3
B - 4
C - 5
Now, if it helps, count the distance you are from the Cs and that will be the finger (e.g., "I just put my thumb on F, which is three steps from C, so I cross my 3rd finger over.")
Or you could try a poem for memorization: "Can Bad Actors Go Find Even Damn Cats?"
that doesn't really make sense, but given time, i'm sure you could figure one out.
P.S. it helps that C major is all white keys. Also, the fingering for C scale does not carry over into other scales, such as C# major, where you must start with finger 2. so don't get stuck on that fingering.
good luck and most of all have fun with your playing! It's very difficult to be self-taught, but stick with it, don't give up and it will pay off in the end! (chicks dig pianists.)
