Bach Prelude and Fugue G Minor, I

Who here has played the G Minor Prelude and Fugue from book one? Any tips? The fugue is quite....difficult. How long should I practice it hands apart? Thanks in advance.

It's one of my favorites from book I which I don't forget and practice almost everyday. As in any in the WTC, it's usual that the fugue is more difficult than the prelude. BTW, a have posted my recording of this in the Audition room - search the title "A Filipino Composition."

I found the fugue is not as difficult as the C-Major from book one.

Look out for measure 30 - It can be tricky.

The other tricky part (at least for me) was mm 24 and the following - where the right and left hand answer each other.

I have played it slowly, pensively, however, most recordings tend to take it much faster (Schiff and Hewitt). I've tried to take it faster, but it loses (at least to me) some of the mysterious nature that Bach put into it.

Whoops, I forgot to add that I agree George, it should definitely be taken at a slow tempo.

Your question about this fugue has inspired me (again).

Right after I posted my reply, I went over to the piano and played it - twice.

Fast and jaunty.

Slow and pensive (or as ravelmaniac described it - brooding)

Slow wins.

Sorry for replying to this 4 years later..
I learnt this Prelude and Fugue 3 weeks ago and have posted one of my recordings of it in the audition room. Search for it!
