Sometimes I really like a piece but I'm totally swamped with all the work my teacher gives me... I might ask her if I can learn, so and so piece... And usually she'll say "Sure right when we get done with that chopin etude!"... And then when I get done she forgets, and I don't happen to mention it again then she just gives me another piece. Maybe it's my fault cause I'm sure if I happened to reminded her I wanted to learn a relatively easy Chopin Nocturne next she would jump on the idea! But I really don't worry about it too much and learn everything on my own. Then I'll actually ask her, after I'm done... To help me out a bit with the more precise things... So yeah I do stuff semi on my own...

I only ever learn the music that I choose to, and often go for long periods without a lesson (10 weeks in the summer holidays), so I get a lot of work done on my own, and that seems to be fine,

i only learn by myself pieces that i really love but are far below the level i am at.. pieces like traumerie, nocturne in c# min-Chopin i have learned by myself because it holds such a powerful emotional value to me... but other than that it doesnt really give me a lot of technique work...

When I started my piano lessons, they were private and after that I was left on my own for about 4 years. But then I decided to become a professional and started again for serious in the Conservatoire. After that point, I always played only what my teachers told me to, but of course I negotiated the stuff I really wanted to learn, not always succeeded but never learned something without my teacher's approval.

When I was in school we were required to play a piece we spent 2 weeks learning independently for our regular semester juries, so the faculty obviously thought there was some merit to developing the ability to learn independent of your private teacher.
I think if you have a good teacher, there is nothing wrong with occasionally leaning some music that way. You should not keep it from your teacher, though.

I always did this...but I was always too nervous to tell my teacher. But I don't think it woul've been a problem, most of the songs were pop stuff.
(i've moved on) its the summer now so i dont take lessons, unfortunately, but its good because i have as much time as i want to work on the stuff i want.
