there is a story that in the end of his life, when schumann had increased schizophrenia, he heard the ghosts of mendelssohn and schubert dictating to him a musical piece: a theme with variations.

schumann completed he piece and it was titled "theme with variations in Eb Major"
or "ghost variations"

i have only the page of the theme. anyone got the full sheets for these variations? or recordings or anything?

Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

I had never heard this story before, but find this piece quite enjoyable.

Anyone interested in the works dictated by ghosts should look up Rosemary Brown.

Rather interesting if you like that kind of thing.

Brahms Variations on a theme of Robert Schumann op. 23 for piano duet are based on the same theme.

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Rosemary Brown, yeah! I have a collection of her scores (bought in Oxfam for £ 0.50). She deserves a thread of her own. :D
