What about the Browns?
on: October 11, 2005, 02:59:46 PM
So I was at the music store the other day and I saw like 10 copies of an album featuring the Browns. Apparently they are piano students from Juillard, all seiblings, and they made some arrangements of pieces (such as the Bumble Bee) for several pianos.

Has anyone listened to the CD? Is it just a circus act or is it musically worthy? Cause I thought it might be a good idea as a gift for a student...

I've heard of them. Theyre like a group of brother and/or sisters that are supposedly very good at piano. They travel around the country doing quartets, quintets, sextets, octets, etc.....although I've never heard them before.

I saw them live about 2 years ago.

Two of the sisters and the brother played a Mozart concerto for 3 pianos (not much room left on stage for the orchestra!), and they were delightful.

After intermission, the two older sisters played the Poulenc 2 piano concerto. Remarkable.

There was a pre-concert interview with them and the parents, and all seemed to be healthy, well-adjusted and intelligent. They really seemed to LOVE what they do. Made me jealous as hell.

And, I think only one of the sisters is married (the one on the right)!

You can go to Amazon and hear some of their work as samples:

I just saw them Saturday night.  Live in Houston.  They were great.  Actually, It's the oldest Blonde Desiree that is married.  She married a world class violinist.  Imagine that.
She finished her masters at Juliard.  Desiree is 26.  All the Browns started playing at the age of 3.  They are fantastic actually, and each play with their own style.  I have the Cd and it has bonus DVD features.  It's great.  Flight of the bumblebee was out of this world.  It actually sounded like the humming of bees everywhere.  They played on 5 steinways.  I have to admit however, that my ear isn't trained well enought to handle all the notes of 5 pianos!   It was incredible, but I would have gotten more out of  some more popular arrangements.  Even the solos were very busy, crowded with notes, notes and more notes!  I think I understand what the king in Amadeus meant when he told Mozart "Too many notes!"  Not that I would advocate leaving any of them out, just play a few songs with not so many notes!  I would buy the Cd.  It's worth seeing them play 5 pianos together.

It sounds cool, but are you sure it's not cheesy as hell? I want to check them out, but I'm hesitant. I mean, are they just playing show off pieces just to play up the sibling gimmick?

Imagine what it'll be like when the famous one gets a pet baboon and turns himself into his sister with 5000 operations, and the other nearly famous one rips her top off at the superbowl....
