Buying a digital piano: Roland HP or Yamaha CLP?
on: November 02, 2005, 06:23:06 PM
Hey

I'm getting a digital piano for christmas and I am currently looking at this model: https://www.thomann.de/thoiw6_artikel-186754.html

I've heard good things about the Clavinova pianos but I saw a local ad today for a Roland HP-7e

The Roland is half the price at €1000. I did a search on the roland but couldnt find much information on it. I think it is out of production. Does anyone know which piano would be better taking into consideration to price of each piano. I dont want to sacrifice sound though if the Roland is too out of date

Any information would be really appreciated.

Many Thanks

Darren

Turns out the Hp-7e is €1200. There is also now an ad for a Roland HP2 for the same price

If anyone knows anything about these particular digital pianos and their prices can you please help me. I'm hoping to either get one second hand or else I'll probably order a CLP-240 at the end of this month, just over two weeks away

Thanks

I play keyboards in church every week. I can tell you that if you want a truer "piano" sound, you should always go with Yamaha. If you want more keyboard-like sounds, you can go with Roland, or better yet Korg.

I love the Yamaha. I play the Motif 8

Do you need the 'furniture' and features of a CLP, really?   A P-90 or it's variants may be a better long run investment, and it is a fabulous digital piano.  The portability may mean something to you later on even if you do not need it now.

I would go with Yamaha Clavinova.  This particular model looks awesome! They are fanastic digital pianos.  The best I have heard on the market.  If you have the money to buy one, get it, because you won't reget it later on.  Honestly, I wouldnt go with lessor models like the P-90 or any of the P series digital pianos.  I tried them and I didn't like the sound it offered.  I would go with Clavinova.  I wished I had one.  It's always nice to have a digital along with acoustic pianos at home.   :) Good luck.  Let us know when you get one and tell us about it.   ;D

Since P-90s do not have built-in speakers, how did you compare the sound of a Clav to it, using headphones for both?  I don;t know much about Clavs but there is a huge range of them, some of which I believe have exactly the same action and piano sounds as a P-90 so the difference there would be in the speaker system used.  I have my P-80 connected to a 100watt per channel 4 speaker system and I think the sound is much better than even a higher end Clav.

I say YES to Clavinova. I am a school teacher, and I teach general music and chorus. I have a clavinova in my room. Don't know off hand which model, but it's pretty top, because it has all kinds of things on it, including a sequencer.

The sound, and the keyboard, just awesome... It's definately worth the money, and it'll last forever.

Try them all Darren, or at least as many as you can.

Yamaha, Roland, Gem etc etc.

I personally think the Gem has the best sound of the bunch with the physical modelling [which would be the  rp800 given the budget you're talking and the clp model you're looking at - you'll probably spend less in fact] but YMMV.

Thanks everyone. I went with the Yamaha CLP-240 in Rosewood. Ordered it 2 days ago and it was shipped this morning. Will have it either next week or the week after.

That is a nice video of the clavinovas. Thanks again
