Reminds me of several cuts of that wonderful Horowitz Scarlatti album from the lates 50s, I think, alhtough he never played this, not that I've heard.

Wonderful!

(Again, listening to the applause, I wonder if anyone in the audience had any idea of what you had just done.)  :(

Gary

By the way, I want to make a point, about why I almost never pay to hear concerts. I've heard playing of this level only a few times in my life. If you ever play in this area, I'll come!

Very very well done!!

I played this piece last year and will probably pick it up again sooner or later for a competition. However I found it just slightly fast, (IMO)... maybe just a little slower? Just to capture the true character of the piece (I'm not saying you didnt, in any way, just maybe calm it down a little, cos its a very calm piece, no need to race)

I really enjoyed it. As gaer said, its rare that incredible performers put on an amazing concert but you managed... what concert was that anyway? The audience didnt exactly seem too interested... hmmm.
I dont play an instrument, I play the piano.

Amazing clarity! But I would say that you played this piece incredibly fast.  I don't think it's too calm a piece as Danyal have said but it sure would sound much lovelier if you play it slower.  It makes the piece sounds very choppy rather than having that baroque style continuity about it.  A bit harsh on some notes as well like bar 35.
But it would be fun to see your fingers move that fast.  One of my favourite of the many Scarlatti sonatas.  Very well done Koji!

It's admirable the talent and the work behind being able to play in that way, indeed such acrobatics at the piano are very impressive. Will you consider the possibility of submitting a new recording of the piece, but this time slower, so that instead of showing mainly virtuosism, which no doubt is worthy of applause, one could enjoy mainly art and the beauty of the music? To me such a lovely piece played like that seems rather an sensational etude or an interesting curiosity exclusive for sharing among pianists (and for which I thank you).
Does the score have really that final chord?

Really outstanding playing Kolji i love the tempo. I must admit it has a Glen Gould thing about it.

O by the way shame on the audience for not claping louder, i would have been shouting BRAVO BRAVO.

brilliant technical achievement, enviable skill.  Subjectively i have to agree with some earlier comments on tempo. I feel a that a slightly less hard driven beat would allow for more of the feeling of fantasy and improvised invention to be revealed, not to mention a certain minor key wistfulness underpinning the forward drive of the piece.  hope you dont mind my saying so-i'm still mighty impressed.

my background: i haven't heard this sonata in my whole life.

IMO, it's great music! i seldom hear music that appeals to me greatly especially when i don't know the piece.

it's wonderful how i don't know it, never heard it, but seemed like i connect with it right away because of your playing.

congratulations!

That's interesting, because I also have not heard this sonata, and my reaction was the same. It's possible that because the majority of people play it more slowly, there is a certain weight of tradition influencing people who know it. :)

I find the first time I hear something, I am prejudiced in favor of the initial performance, if I like it, and I like this one very much. If it were pure speed, I might feel differently, but I love the lightness. I wish, in fact, we got to hear more Scarlatti here, because I have always loved his music. :)

I need help downloading the file!

First of all, I have PC and have cable connection.

I right-clicked the link and selected Save Target As, gave it a name in the dialog-box and hit OK, and the file was saved in mere seconds. But only the first two seconds of the Sonata were saved and played. Why?

Was funny when Dubal played this performance in comparison with another on his radio show; the other pianist didn't do repeats and the timings were approximately the same, heh.

in my worthless opinion,
the speed of this performance is perfect
sure, it could be played slower and it would be fine also, but Koji here is attempting a more taut performance which, at this speed, is conveyed brilliantly.
generally working on:
Bach Toccata in g minor
Rachmaninoff 3rd Concerto

Reminds me very much of the Michelangeli performance of this same sonata that was in the "Art of Piano" DVD. Fast, taut, brilliantly articulated. Bravo!

Thanks Koji,

I REEEEEAAALLY enjoyed your Scarlatti.  :D

I didn't know this piece, so I am not prejudiced about anything. I like other Scarlatti sonatas too, but this one's so nice. Speed was ok and you play very lively and pronounced. I'd say: a perfect 10  ;)

Any tips??  Also, do you use the pedal at the places where the hands cross?

Well Done  :D

Kolji is close with interpretation, but not exactly like Michelangeli.
