Upper Back Ache
on: January 03, 2006, 07:24:22 PM
Hello.

I am a life long on and off student of piano. I normally just mess around on the piano for twenty minutes to an hour each day but recently I've been trying to improve my sight reading and I've been doing scales as well.

I have recently noticed that when I sit down to play I develop a sort of aching in the area between my shoulder blades. It feels a little better when I squeeze my blades together which is usually accompanied by a knuckle cracking sound but the ache continues.

Is this a problem with my posture?

Any ideas?

yes.  you might need to put your shoulders back and align your spine so that the lower back carries more.  1/2 way into my lessons, i have been reminded of this.  also, i used to ALWAYS lean forward.  now, when i feel like leaning forward, i try to lean back.  it is still a hard concept - because my habit was the opposite.

This used to happen to me.

I went to see a chripractor who pushed and pulled me around for an hour and i was fine.

I go back twice a year for similar punishment.

Hey-

I have that along with shoulders that are caving in and a sore neck- it's all from sitting with poor posture and no back support 7-8 hours a day. I saw a chiropractor and am now seeing a physical therapist who is working with me on strengthening other back muscles to compensate for the ones that are on overdrive. It really is a pain in the neck.
Do something about it or it will get worse.

Chuck Norris didn't lose his virginity- he systematically tracked it down and destroyed it.

I had the same problem..my piano teacher said that I was sitting too close to the piano. By moving the bench back, it solved the problem for me.
