Yamaha DGX505 (DGX-505AD) vs Casio Privia PX-100
on: February 03, 2006, 10:52:38 PM
Hello,
I'm a beginner and have been meaning to buy a low-cost digital piano for practice at home. I found these two at Amazon.com and they are very close in price, so I'd like to find out which one you would recommend. BTW, the Casio Privia PX-100 doesn't come with a stand, and it is $100 on Amazon, so we are talking about Yamaha $530 vs Casio $570. Thank you.

Well, I post a thread some days ago asking about the Casio Privia PX-100. It's a great low cost digital piano, I bought the PX-110 model and I am very happy with it. However I think Yamaha is pretty better, mainly because they construct real pianos.
By the other hand, you have to differentiate between two types of generating the sound in these pianos. There is the sampling system, and the recorded sounds.  The last the better.
So I would choose the Yamaha piano.
Good luck!

The yamaha model you've listed doesn't have a weighted keyboard. I think it's semi-weighted. Not ideal.

I would do what Nicolaievich did and get the PX-110 if you get a casio.

Yamahas with weighted keyboards you might want to consider the YDP models [a cheap one with a stand for e.g is the YDP-113] or the P-series - either the P60 or one of the newer models, the P65 or P70 - they are stage pianos, so you'd need a stand.

More models if you spend a bit more, of course.

There seems to be varying opinions among the reviews. One of the "spotlight" reviewer says it's not weighted, but he/she claims by research. There are one or two saying they own the instrument and the keys are definitely weighted. Yet another says the keys are "lightly-weighted".

What does "semi-weighted" mean?
Thanks.

Well, our opinions and amazon's really aren't worth a light compared with you playing it.

You need to go and try a few real pianos and then a few digitals for yourself :) Don't buy one  over the internet without doing that.

Semi-weighted, lightly weighted are all saying the same thing. It doesn't have the graded hammer effect keyboard that other yamahas do, which attempts to mimic a real piano.

I would recommend you go with something with weighted keys, either the Privia, or the new Yamaha P-70, which I think is in the same $500-something price range, though maybe a little more than the Privia.
