I like Godowsky's the best as long as Lisitsa is not the pianist. Rosenthal not bad either.

hahah true gods is wikid

have you heard the cziffra improv containing the theme?

he doesnt do this in his paraphrase, but its HEADBANGINGLY AWESOME when he builds up to a climax, climax with entry of the main theme, and on the repeat - as you know, the piece is in 3/4 as it is a waltz - he accents the bass insanely every 2 notes and creates this awesome feel, a touch of complete genius which is randomly on par with his zepp trill  8)

I'm not sure if I've got this one, mind posting it ?;)
Most of my Cziffra stuff is one my old computer which has been 'iced', so I haven't heard any of it in ages. I remember his paraphrase vaguely and iirc I liked what he did with the theme but not so much the rest (kinda like his tea for two).

That Scriabin 4 performance is appalling.

I wouldn't put it that strongly but his tone is very clipped, which robs the piece of a lot of it's allure. This is an excellent example of the wrong technique used in the wrong repertoire. He's so close to keys, like he's playing Scarlatti or Bach, it's a wonder he can get any tone at all. In the coda, his shoulders go way up, you can see how uncomfortable he is. If he played from above the fff tone would be full and round. Don't think he'll change though, his habits seem pretty formed.

I was TOTALLY put off by the sound of his playing after the first bar.

It's clear the man has a good virtuoso technique, but there was hardly any dynamic variation in the performance at all.

Gavrilov (who could very well have been thinking about what he had for breakfast that morning) gave a very perfunctory reading of the first movement. However, the performance of the second is an absolute mindblower. As a whole the performance of the sonata is actually quite good because he understood the basic mood of the piece as a whole and could deliver a contrast between the two halves.

In that case...

&search=earl%20wild%20piano

He played a great version of Schumann's Papillons at the same concert, but the video's nowhere to be found on YouTube. I believe this is around the time of his 90th birthday recital (he looks the same, anyway :P). Rubinstein also gave concerts into his 90s, but I'm sorry to say that I never witnessed any of them.

I also want to randomly play this with my flute player.  Now, to only track down the score.

Maybe I'll just issue lables in the first 6 rows as a "splash zone" - just like when you go see the dolphins and killer whales.
