Hamelin: Etude IX d'aprés Rossini "La Danza" (Tarantella napoletana).  Marc-André Hamelin made this phenomenal transcription and elaboration of Rossini's La Danza in 1987, and dedicated it to Russell Sherman.

Seconded! I would love to fool around on one and perhaps sightread some of Messiaen's stuff, if I could figure out how.

My first encounter with this interesting instrument was in 2003 when I accompanied a choir at a concert which was dedicated mainly to works by Charles Koechlin (1867-1950), a French composer who was in love with this instrument and wrote a lot for it. He wrote also very interesting piano compositions.

Yes, Koechlin has some wonderful stuff for that instrument. I really like Messiaen and Jolivet's works for it more though. Both seemed to have a more thorough understanding of it's capabilities and musical capacities. Nevertheless, I hope this instrument gets back in style.

Without a doubt!  It's my favorite piece written during my lifetime.

It's ingenious, well-written for the instrument, full of all possible brilliance, bearing exceptional sound and a powerful, dramatic atmosphere.  Furthermore, it's pianistic as Vine himself was a pianist.

We should make a thread asking people what their favorite piece written during their lifetime is. It would make for some interesting responses (or lack thereof). Unless, of course, people like Alistair Hinton reply. He has it easy.

Hi, I'd like to share this amazing Filipino composition, Mayon Fantasy, by Francisco Buencamino. Mayon is actually a famous volcano in the Philippines. The piece is about a happy town in the vicinity of Mayon, an eruption that destroys the town, a prayerful intermezzo, and a brilliant finale:

This young girl, on the cusp of womanhood,
discovers the clearly phallic big, yellow
Pencilface. Pencilface lures her in with the
promise to satisfy her still childish desires,
for sweets (it's so symbolic that the first
gift is a wedding cake!) and a kite, which
represents freedom. But it's all a trap, and
she is drawn into the abyss of sexual
promiscuity.
