How difficult is op. 25 Nr. 9?
on: September 10, 2006, 01:39:31 PM
I'm gonna start this etude. How difficult is it? What are the difficult parts? How difficult is it when you compare it to other etudes? Let me know

Many rate it as being easy, one of the easiest, and I never understood why. To me it is pretty difficult. Your hand has to remain streched in an angular position, from which you have to extract all the subtle variations in touch and phrasing. Personally, I feel more comfortable with the previous one, op 25/8 in sixths, even though I know that many find the sixths etude to be one of the hardest...
I guess a lot depends on how serious you take all the nuances in phrasing, legato/staccato, dynamics prescribed by Chopin. If you ignore these, yes, then etude is comparatively not so difficult. But remeber that Cortot calls this an etude in precision.

I actually found this one pretty difficult. It's definately not one of the hardest Chopets, but it's definately a low mileage piece. Non-musician friends say that it sounds easy, but they dont realize the numerous hours I put into it. Hmmm, I even put more time into this than the "Black Key" or "Ocean" etudes. the hard part is that, even though you might have the technique for it right off the bat, it goes so quick with changing positions and inversions, that you really don't have any time to think. For me, that was the main difficulty.
