new hammers for Steinway D
on: September 29, 2006, 07:18:43 PM
My 20 year old New York Steinway D needs a new set of hammers, full action reweighting and regulation. What should I reasonably expect to pay for such a job in the US?
And by the way, any of you have experience with the Stanwood Action? Pros and cons? Cost compared to conventional Steinwat hammers and regulation?
Thanks for your help.

For one thing, you have to find a Stanwood technician in your area who can measure touchweights and send this and related information to David Stanwood for analysis. The technician receives back a printout specifying the changes required per hammer.
If you need new hammers the presumption would probably be to request replacement hammers from Steinway NY, unless you or your technician have a specific argument in favor of Abel or Renner. I presume the new hammers would have to be installed first so you can judge the feel, and then have the information sent to Stanwood.
Very rough estimates of cost, based on my Stanwood design and new hammers, would be about $1,000 for hammers and a minimum of $3,000 for the touch design. I can certainly recommend the Stanwood approach for optimal action regulation, and it is useful to do this if you are getting new hammers anyway.
Here is a list of Stanwood technicians.

Can someone describe the difference between NY Steinway hammers and Renner?

Renner is the German one used by Hamburg Steinways. Some people (usually technicians, not pianists) say they're better than the NY action parts, but personally I wouldn't know.
