What do you think are the greatest sonatas of all time, of any composer?

I would have to say that among the greatest would be Beethoven's op. 111, Liszt's B minor, Prokofiv's Sonata 7, Rachmaninoff's #1.  Actually, these are just some of my favorites, but I think that they are great pieces.

I would like to add on the Chopin Piano Sonata No. 2 and 3. To me, my choice of the greatest piano sonata is the Liszt Piano Sonata in B minor. What about Rachmaninoff No. 2 Sonata?

the sonatine has a ball-busting mother-*** of a finish.

i havent learnt a single full alkan piece actually, they are rather difficult dont you know, although i did learn the 'notes' to op 76 no 3, but i could never get it up to speed, and ive forgot it now  
but im sure im going to learn lots in future

That's one of the ones I mentioned, and I agree. It's one of the monuments of piano lit.

Naturally, Beethoven's Pathetique surpasses them all.  But the Chopin sonatas no. 2 and 3 are also really good.  And the Mozart in A minor, I forget the K number.

 310.  The Lipatti performance (especially the live one) is extraordinary.

brahms, and not just the 3rd, all of them (try 1st!), also beethoven 101, 106, 109 (especially 3rd part, the theme and variations), 110 (how about that fugue), 111, also op. 26 (both 3rd and 4th part are quite difficult, but try playing them one after the other! it's something like the attaca between 2nd and 3rd part in beethoven 4th concerto... i know i almost get a heart attack )); also bartok, lipatti "sonatina" (good joke) for the left hand... and more, i don't remember right now
