Piano keys too light to the touch!!
on: November 02, 2006, 03:45:08 PM
I have an eavestaff piano with a lovely tone, however the key are very light to play somtimes making almost impossible to express dynamics as i would like. Is it possible to make the action of the keys stiffer? How big a job is this if it is possible?

Yes, get a piano technician

2 options that I know of:

1) Add lead weights to the keys or somewhere in the labyrinth of the piano

2) (more viable) pull the springs longer somewhere in the action of the piano so it's harder to press
Bach - Partita No.2
Scriabin - Etude 8/12
Debussy - L'isle Joyeuse
Liszt - Un Sospiro

Goal:
Prokofiev - Toccata

Sometimes the less expensive uprights not only have a light touch, but an "uncomplex" touch.  Grands seem to have a somewhat more complex feel.

You are right.  I play a low-priced upright at my lessons, and I have difficulty getting any dynamics out of it (loud-soft).

My grand is quite a sophisticated lady by comparison.

Technicians/tuners can also pull the whole action (Hammers and so on) further away from the strings to give the hammer a longer striking rnage, which wil harden the keys and give you better dynamics. Not so much of a cost, if your tuner is friendly and knows his job.
