Need advice on Czerny
on: January 29, 2004, 04:44:10 AM
Can you give me some advice on practicing Op. 740 Nş 14?
I´m practicing RH only, one note per second. Is it the right way to practice this kind of studies? :'(

Well, I would never play it that slow.  There's a lot to be said for slow practice, but one note per second seems too extreme and monotonous.  Hands seperate is good for acquainting the fingers with the music, so keep doing it until you are used to the passages, then add left hand.  Don't be afraid to pick up the pace, maybe two or three notes per second would be better.

One note per second!?? Are you insane??  Czerny pieces generally go at 12 notes per second.  I would never practice slower than 1/5 of the actual speed.

Opus 740 are etudes. And like all technical excercises  , its purpose is to aquire skill in different kind of passages. You´re not supposed to do it right before practicing it. So, it´s for any level. Op. 740 is not a concert suite of pieces, it´s for practicing in home, like Pischna.

I'm doing op. 740 no. 2 but I don't know anything about no. 14 (haven't tried it yet).
I have found for no. 2 the best approach is to try playing it at all different speeds, like almost as fast as it's meant to be, followed by really slow. I think that one second per note does have its benefits because you really can analyse your hand position for each note which I think is really important in Czerny studies. I couldn't be bothered playing it that slow very much, though, because it could end up unnecessarily taking longer to get quicker at it.
Separate hands is a must, of course.
