I went browsing gutenberg a while back and bookmarked a few books:

Musical Memories by Saint-Saens - https://www.gutenberg.org/files/16459/16459.txt
Music as a Language - https://www.gutenberg.org/files/16225/16225.txt
Chopin and Other Essays - https://www.gutenberg.org/files/18560/18560.txt
How to Listen to Music - https://www.gutenberg.org/files/17474/17474.txt
For Every Music Lover (essays) - https://www.gutenberg.org/files/18284/18284.txt

I've only gotten partway through 'Every music lover'.  Some interesting thoughts, touches on a lot of territory.
