Playing when ill?
on: March 09, 2004, 06:09:25 PM
I have quite a serious cold right now, and I don't know if it's ok to play the piano or not when ill. I've heard or read somewhere that it can damage your brain, but since I'm not sure about it, I might as well just ask here.

I usually can't concentrate when I am ill. My brain is a mess at that time. So I can't really play at all. But you could better sleep instead of play so the illness goes.

Well, I don't think this applies for a cold. But I don't think it damages your brain.

ive had plenty colds and still kept up my playing, it does no harm, your playing will be worse, but you will improve your playing more if you brave the storm and just get on with it.

Yeah, you just gotta use common sense. If you feel like curling up into a little ball and sleeping, then sleep. If you think you might get into trouble with a teacher or something if you didn't practice, get a doctor's certificate.
Not practicing for a little can be good too anyway.
I don't think your brain will get damaged, though.

Thanks, I just did what you told me (do what I wanted) and I played when I felt like it. It wasn't as good, but I just took it slowly so that I wouldn't lose anything. I'm nearly healed now, yay ^^. Thanks everyone!

playing piano when ill cannot damage the  brain  ;)

(I had never thought of it before you sent this message)
I used to play piano when I felt ill, sad, or weak, I think when you feel really bad this help you a lot.
When you feel tired, you forget for some time your illness. When you're angry or sad, you improve your playing in some way.

Oddly, I play best technically with a fever.  I am so utterly relaxed (mostly because I lack the will to be tense) that I play faster and more fluid than when I'm well.  Unfortunately, the magic disappears when I have recovered.  That's why I play Alkan when ill.  And have a tape recorder ready.
