Mazeppa Fingering/Editions
on: March 19, 2004, 12:40:14 AM
I have started to work on Mazeppa

What fingering to people use for the ascending thirds?

In the Peters Edition, thhey have 2-4 written for the thirds in both hands in all of the first and second presentations of the main theme
. There is a stern footnote at the bottom, saying that any reworking of the fingering to make it more facile (ie. LH 2-4, 1-3; RH 2-3, 1-4) .would be against Liszt's intentions.

Just curious as to what people use/think

Yea, that would be against Liszt's intentions but I guess if 2-4's too hard then switching it a bit could be alright  :-/. I don't have a definite confirmation on this but I heard that Claudio Arrau used a similar finger suggestion as the one you said, has anyone else heard or read about that?

The all-2-4 fingering as suggested by Liszt will add power to the galloping horse. Try practise it that way, and you might be surprised that it is not as difficult as you might think it is.
