Correct fingering for scales in thirds?
on: August 09, 2007, 07:10:41 PM
I have a hard time playing scales in thirds evenly

What is the fingering if you wan to play for instance an aolian c-minor scale with thirds on top?

3 4 5 2 3 4 5  3
1 2 3 1 1 2 3  1

for example  8)
If it doesn't work - try something different!

From (2 1) to (3 1) that would be very hard to play evenly I think.

I tried  (3 1) to (2 4) and that work better for me I think but when I look at the best pianists playing thirds it seems like they use different fingerings that use the thumb a lot more but I haven´t found any good instruction video or anything like that

Let's compare it to playing scales in octaves: the thumb jumps from note to note all the time, and it's possible to make it sound quasi legato (with a little help of the pedal  ;) )

That may be true, I wonder what fingerings Lhevinne used when he recorded the Chopin "thirds" etude?

So even and so fluid

I wonder if there is some general guideline on how to create fingering for 3rds and 6ths.

I have trouble with this a lot. I've been trying a lot of pieces that include this and often if there is a suggested fingering then it doesn't seem to suit me - a lot of them seem to say I should do something like this in the right hand:

31
53

in a situation where it would be quite awkward (i can't think of any specific examples at the moment) when it really isn't necessary at all...I don't get it ??? so yeah i just ignore it :p

but yes...i am bad at scales in thirds.
