How many Yale students do we have here?
on: September 19, 2007, 10:23:33 PM
Not wannabes...actual students. I'm a wannabe and I'm just curious what particular sonatas, P & F's, etc. that the actual students performed for their auditions.

I knew one.  Not very well.  She played Waldstein for her audition, among other things.

I'm an undergrad at Yale (not studying music) but you're probably looking for students in the Yale school of music.

Do you have access to a catalogue?  Have you contacted the music department??  Are you under some delusion that audition recommendations are a state secret???  Or, are we just supposed to be impressed that you are considering Yale????

Contact Yale.  Please.

...on a sidenote, is Yale's music degree really fantastic? I understand that Boris Berman teaches there and is one of the best teachers today, but I think I've read someone complaining somewhere that the academic requirements are also heavy...

[This is out of curiousity...no, I'm not considering Yale...and no, not because I'm too good for them...I guess that puts me in the wannabe category too ;)]

I went to a masterclass with Berman in China. He is a really excellent teacher.

I asked Berman about Yale and he said 1 in 20 students get in - coz it's free the competition is hard obviously.  There is a general knowledge quiz to watch out for (be prepared coz we heard about some hilarious answers) Peter Frankl and someone else whose name escapes me are the 2 main teachers.
I went to the summer school he holds outside Milan and yes he is a very good etacher, concerntrates a lot on the lyrical qualities, but I decided he wasn't right for me.
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

Yes!!  Way to go, cmg.

Oh yes, and about that general knowledge quiz, one of my friends go asked to name as much Brahms chamber music as he could.  OOOHhhh they wanted to see if he was a Philistine.

Most likely you're looking for a BM degree?? Because Yale, as far as I know, only has a BA degree for the underrgrad program and in order to get into the school of music, you have to be accepted by the institution... I think it's only free for Masters students also.

Speaking of Yale , I saw a violinist grad student today in recital. I don't know much about violin but she was amazing.

I'm a Yale music MS wannabe too, a serious one, quited my job to work towards that... but I'm starting to have some doubt... umm... i mean... a lot of doubts... really don't think i'm cut out for this, even if I practice 12 hrs a day and study theory, history, etc. for the other 12 hrs... (of course i haven't tried)  and I haven't started this journey for long at all... manOman... how can I ever get in... it's just impossible... it feels less real than a video game (not that i play it)!...

OK, cut... I go back to my theory hw... gonna fight once for ma precious life!! ;D

K, that really didn't contribute to this thread at all... buenas noches i guess...
