To those of you who suggested I go anyway, thank you, thank you, thank you! Wow, he was incredible. At times I was reminded of the tremendous virtuosity of Lazar Berman, at others the probing introspection of Sokolov. I've never heard such volcanic eruptions as he produced in "The Great Gates of Kiev." In addition to "Pictures", he played Haydn Sonata in F Hob XVI/23 and a Chopin group: Nocturne Op.15 No.1, Ballade No.4, and Scherzo No.1. He played everything with an amazing array of colors and drama. Quite a fine recital, I must say!
