ravel Tombeau I. prelude
on: July 14, 2008, 07:27:49 PM
im not sure i get this. Do the little trills go on the beat or before? sometimes they seem like should go before. other times they feel like they go on. also ravel marked the first note of the little trills sometimes with a tenuto and sometimes with an accent! does accent mean on the beat, and tenuto before the beat? otherwise how would you distinguish between an accent and a tenuto in such a fast tempo and with such a little note

Hey I'm working on this right now! (It's a fascinating piece, let alone in an even more fascinating suite).
I think what you're referring to are not trills, but the written out mordents-- and they begin ON the beat not before the beat.

thanx.. all of them? For instance how would the RH and LH line up in the second bar if they were on the beat?

Haha, I just know pedagogically Ravel intended them to be written our mordents, meaning they start on the beat. I've just started learning this piece so I cant really tell you with much authority why its that way. I'm pretty sure its for every mordent-- I actually play them really fast so they dont seem like 32nd notes and wouldn't match with the LH 16ths.
Hey btw, I just randomly came across that Tempest Sonata that you performed in the audition room-- it sounds great!! You should be giving ME some advice, haha. What else are you learning at the moment?? (if you dont mind)

ALL trills in Le tombeau are to be played ON the beat. Ravel asks for it in each piece where he uses trills. (prelude, forlande, riguadon, minuet)
