I dont think he does the piano justice...  He plays too hard{eg. - every song is the worst war Beethoven ever wrote about} Even Beethoveen had some pleasingly melodic pieces till he became deaf!!
To me the piano, the king of insruments talks..It can be melodic and create plesant wavelenghts in the brain..  Maybe the guy hasnt matured..  My mom is reading his popular biography he has out.. Sounds like his father was bordereing on a psychotic, masochist in pushing Lang Lang to only play at  disturbing 250 decibels..

Well he is only 26, so I would imagine his concert ready 'repertoire' may not be as extensive as Horowitz' was when he passed away.

I would hazard a guess and say he can play anything he wants as he has a monster technique and superb interpretation IMHO.

I also think he has toned down the theatrics in his playing considerably, although I don't see becoming one with the performance and music as theatrics.

That, hands down - no question, is the best description/explanation I've read on his behavior at the piano.

My own experiences - heard him play Prokofiev 3 before he hit it really big, I really enjoyed it. Two years later I heard him play one of the Chopin concertos - it was a nightmare, I got the impression that he really didn't understand the music.

(BTW, I close my eyes to listen at every concert - so I really didn't know about Lang Lang's histrionics until you tube!).
