practice...

 ;)

Just interested in finding out about anyone's practice routine..as I teach music in school I have to manage my time well, and I usually can get about 1/1/2 hrs practice a day in.  Is it best to split that time up into scales/arpeggio's or just work on peices?  I have decided to abandon czerny and hanon exercises as I don't feel they are satisfying

Everyone is different and what you are trying to work on at a given time can mean a different routine as well.  For example, if I am trying to concentrate intensely on a section (technique or memorisation) I usually find about 20 to 30 minutes is intensely productive.  If I am building stamina, I need at least 1 1/2 hours in one sitting.  If I am preparing a technically demanding piece for performance, I need to warm up for 1/2 an hour and then I need to work for about an hour on one movement.  If I am working on sections that require a lot of finger strength and intensity (such as a loud, fast passage) I need to take regular and frequent breaks but I usually can't sit down cold to these.

You need to experiment with different things at different times and find out what works best for you on the piece/s you are studying at that time.  Just stay focused on your fingers and your attention.  If either are wearing thin, take a break.  If your schedule demands you work in brief periods, be very goal oreinted in those times - small, manageable sections or tasks that will benefit from brief, focused work.

Hi
Your question I think is more about what to practice? or how to parctice? Or both?
