Which is the best fingering? and what kind of sound does each achieve?

1231234 is standard

1234123 makes micro-accents on the E which may be more pleasing to the ear

4545345 makes it a fun exercise and showoff trick

1212123 or 1313123 may be more even

1234512345 through the whole thing is like zooming through a speedbump zone but can be the fastest of all

1234523 is awesome too, proving the thumb isn't the only way...try 2345234 too

Fun can be had with this.

The only 'best' fingering for you is the one you concider to be the best. So try them all and do what you like, not much point for us to advice you on it.

Not a, but THE winterwind scale, Chopin's etude op. 25 no. 11, known as the Winterwind etude, ends with with a huge and very fast unisono scale in a minor (melodic).

I use 123 1234.

Learn it in every key with that fingering. That gets interesting.

I find experimenting with scales fun.

I wouldn't find 1234512345 fast for that scale....but this is the fastest fingering for chromatic scales when you can get away with breaking the legato. For example Wilde Jagd 2nd page scales, 54321 54321 and 12345 12345 in LH makes it possible to play in time.

My old teacher told me to use 1234512345 in the fast chromatic scale in Beethoven 4th concerto, but I dont like that. Best fingering for chromatic scales in my opinion is the one where you start put the thumb on everyother white note.


What about the evil scale in Prokofiev 7th sonata 1st mvt? Me and my teacher came up with some strange fingerings for that in my lesson today. There are loads of different fingerings for that.

What about 4th Scherzo scale? I think that is just the nicest thing to play. I find E major the easiest scale to play at extreme speeds.

I use 1231234 for r, and 54321321 for l. Standard scale.

Even trickier is the scale after the mazurka section of the Polonaise in F# minor, Op 44.

That's easy...it's just 1234 and 4321 the whole way. You just need to know what position to land in, and then put the pedal down and off you go.
