Burnt finger help!!
on: November 05, 2008, 07:45:18 PM
I have just burnt my LH index finger! I was getting something out of the oven, and the towel I was holding fell off, and my finger came into contact with the baking tray. It didn't hurt that much at first, it just made me pull my hand away quickly....1 minute later, and big blister thing formed, and 1 minute after that it was (and still is) absolutly agonizing!!!! I have put it under cold water, but that oesn't help very much, and I have put sudocreme on it, and that hasn't helped. I can't bend my finger, it just makes it feel like it is going to explode, and it hurts a lot.

What should I do?? I need to practice! And it is right on the end of my finger....like the pad under the tip. It's really worrying, because I need to get a lot of work done for things! Is there any quick solutions? Anyone ever had a similar experience...and have some advice?

Water will only dry it more (ya, I know...)
A good heavy moisturiser cream might help, dunno which brands you have there.

But it will make a blister, the skin will regenerate under it and the blister will eventually pop, nothing to do about that.

Only chance I see is if you can practice with a bandage or gauze or bandaid or something protecting it but I doubt it... I think you're stuck with an injured finger for a while.  ???
I am perfectly normal, it is everyone else who is strange.

Make sure that you let the blister stay as long as possible.
It is there to aid healing.
If God really exists, then why haven't I got more fingers?

ok thanks a lot. I have put some moisteriser on it. It feels a lot better now. It is a lot less swolen, and I can apply some pressure to it. I still can't put anywhere near the amount of pressure required to play the piano....but hopefully it will get better soon.

Thanks for the moisteriser advice, I never would have thought of that  :)

you know, there are these things called "doctors" that would be happy to treat your burn.   you might get better advice there than on an internet piano site.  ;D

Always assuming the OP is in a country where doctors are available without paying through the nose and/or waiting half a geological age for an appointment!

Cold water is the first aid treatment - you did the right thing.  Moisture is the last of your worries with a 2nd degree burn.  However, moisturiser can help if it is the right one at the right time.  Make sure it isn't an oil based moisturiser.  There are creams at chemists useful for burns.  Get proper advice.

If you have to practice - and it would be better if you rested it, though, try short bursts and making the finger icy before playing.  Then wrap so it is under constant pressure and the shock of pressing a key is minimised. Use an anti-inflammatory pain killer like ibuprofen.  It would be better to rest it a few days, though, in case of infection.  It should only be bad for a few days. Maybe you should take the chance to rest instead.
