What to do with a genius?
on: November 07, 2008, 12:15:09 AM
OK, so strictly he may not be a genius but he's a remarkably fine player. I was recording a church choir last weekend and the pianist was a guy of about 20 who is currently studying a science subject at his local university in north London. He strikes me as interesting not least because he has the most amazing tone and sense of rhythm, and plays a very convincing jazz/pop/soul sort of style. Any time the choir wasn't actually singing he just sat at the piano and noodled, varying the choir's songs and various familiar tunes. OK, so he's certainly heard Keith Jarrett, Ramsey Lewis, Oscar Peterson and others, and I suppose on the basis of what I heard he's not necessarily the most original improviser ever, but he's just a very, very good player. One thing I could easily do for him would be to record him, but he said he doesn't have time because of his studies. I'm tempted to make him an offer with some cash in it and see if he can find time to sit down in front of a piano and a couple of microphones around the Xmas break, but does anyone have any other suggestions for putting a bit of general acclaim in the way of a young player who, as far as I can gather, is not known outside his immediate circle of friends and relations?

Maybe its actually better to put his 'genius' in to medical research (or whatever) than playing a fancy christmas tune. True geniusses are smart enough to realise that there are better things to do for the world than playing a choir improvisation
