hands weight rest on fingers causing pain
on: June 01, 2004, 12:45:03 PM
I need an advice regarding the pain in my forth finger of the right hand. It started to develop some ten days ago. The pain comes when I press a key, especially if, with fingers 3-4-5, I have to jump across one key between (stretching the fingers one key wider). The pain starts inside the middle joint of 4th finger and goes up almost all the way to the wrist. If I lay the weight of the hand on it, the pain is stronger.
I am not sure what caused this, but there are two possible causes. One of them is that I have had so much work in the office recently, done a lot of typing and a lot of work with the mouse. It hurts me very this moment... And I pray God that this is the cause.
However, my nightmare is that this is because of the piano. I have recently got myself a new piano teacher who told me that I need to rest the weight of my hands on fingers, practicly, that the hands "hang" on fingers as I play. Is this correct method? I have no clue, I just listened what he said and followed his instructions. He also teaches piano at Sarajevo Music Aceademy, so I trust him completely. I do not play any difficult things which could have caused any sort of injury. I play maybe 1-2 hours a day and a lot more on weekends, but this all together is not enoguh to hurt oneself, is it? My teacher told me I may not play for at least 7 days now and than see what happens. But I am afraid about this "weight" resting on fingers...
Bernhard, you are my last hope

Sounds like the beginning of the need for surgery if you don't stop what you're doing.
Please see here on a related thread.

About your new teacher, have you told him about your pain? Tell him.
