Scriabin Sonata No.5
on: December 21, 2008, 01:55:59 AM
I've been practicing this since September. I'm really enjoying working on it becuase Scriabin writes so brilliantly for the piano. I'm going through it section by section trying to memorise and speed things up. For me memorisation really helps me to play faster and more fluently. Any tips from pianists who've played it before would be much appreciated...

Practice performing it for a trial audience before you play it for jury or recital, or something serious. For a piece especially such as this your memory could react differently under stress.
When you start getting in the momentum of learning this piece you probably have an urge to play it very often day after day. For me this has sometimes given me a false sense of security in playing a piece. Leave it for a week or longer then play it cold, no warm up. See what happens. Check if your memory can recall something that hasn't been practiced in a while.
Try not to rely totally on muscle memory for long sections of this piece. Reinforce with a multitude of start up points.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Thanks Quantum. I checked out your recording of this sonata in the Audition Room - very well played.
