question for concert performers
on: December 30, 2008, 01:27:55 PM
As a concert performer, how are you concerts arranged exactly? Do they call you and ask you to perform or do you call them? Or a mixture of both? Or does it depend on the pianist?

I'm mostly an accompanist so I tend to get asked by other musicians, but in general terms concerts of _very_ seldom offered 'out of the blue' by the organisers. Even at the very highest level, the artist (or more likely his/her agent) gets in touch with the organisers and pesters them for a slot. About the only time this doesn't happen is when it's a repeat booking - after your first big festival date, if it was well received, the organisers may come up and book you for next year. The first gig, however, generally needs some hassling.

A very few performers probably don't have to do this, the likes of Kissin, Argerich etc. However, I have a close friend who regularly plays dates like the Verbier Festival, the BBC Proms, concertos with major orchestras worldwide and so on, and his agent is always on the case agitating for more gigs for him.

So, if you were asking the question for the obvious reasons, my advice is - get used to doing the marketing routine!
Instrumentalists are all wannabe singers. Discuss.

they call me sometimes but most of the time i am the one to formulate a recital. other performances are invitational - festivals or the like. i usually get performances in competitions also. my sponsors usually invite me to their houses... in terms of arranging, i realized that i need an agent to arrange for me. just recently, my recital almost turn into a musical disaster because i am, literally, tired because i am the one who took responsibility for following up the details on orchestra, guests and cocktails... my God! I am also the performer... hahahahaha... don't do this! just be in charge of the music...
