As much as I admire the Japanese and what they accomplish and the way they live, I cannot understand this fixation with robots!  They're so good at imitating and copying, I have a feeling they're trying to copy god.   ??? ::)

Did you know that wolves and coyotes have started cross-breeding, which has led to a couple of coyotes killing a woman?  I don't have a link, sorry.  But, maybe you can find one online.

- Did you know that in 1964 American authorites allowed the cutting down of a 5000 year old tree?

From https://www.neatorama.com/2007/03/21/10-most-magnificent-trees-in-the-world/
"...in 1964, Donald R. Currey [wiki], then a graduate student, was taking core samples from a tree named Prometheus. His boring tool broke inside the tree, so he asked for permission from the US Forest Service to cut it down and examine the full cross section of the wood. Surprisingly the Forest Service agreed! When they examined the tree, Prometheus turned out to be about 5,000 years old, which would have made it the world’s oldest tree when the scientist unwittingly killed it!"

Scary.  Kind of a nice example of a real world experiment on people though.

Although I don't think "Western" means processed junk food all the time.

- Did you know that a former owner of a funeral home and cremation service in Newark (NJ USA), was sentenced to five years for theft of human remains? Payment was $1,000 per corpse.
Apparently they took things like bones from the bodies and replaced them with plastic pipes so it wouldn't be noticed if the families requested a viewing!

Stephen Finley alone sold access to up to 100 bodies. None of the stolen parts was screened for disease, as required by law. As a result, transplant recipients nationwide may have received tissue infected with cancer, HIV or other diseases.

https://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/06/ex-newark_funeral_director_rem.html

I googled this sort of crime and saw it has happened quite a few times!

Doesn't surprise me.  New Jersey - and newark, especially - is the mafia's cove for the whole east coast.  And you can be sure this is mafia based.  What I wonder is what did they do with the bones?  Reminds me of the cappucine cemetary in Rome - a whole chapel made up of dead monks' bones...YUCK!

I believed they sold the bones for transplants. Something like this:

I didn't know about NJ's reputation, that's interesting.

I should never have read that article.  I just had a bone transplant done.  Along with bone taken from my tibias, they used some bone from a bone bank!!!   :-[

The articles I've seen said the poles haven't completely shifted for 780,000 years.  No one really knows what will happen.  I'm guessing it will screw up some electronic stuff and things like this compass situation.

I was going to post something along the lines of "That's not mine!" but man....  I am kind of curious how you go from point A to the point B of ending up in a flood.  It doesn't say -- Maybe they were stranded by the flood, killing time?  "other inflatable items" salvaged... like inflatable furniture?  Or they had a fake people party going on?

I did hear about the flooding.  It's been going on for more than a week or so now?  Not to be a downer, but I think there was a news story from those floods where a boy told a rescuer not to take him but to take his brother instead.  The boy and his mom ended up drowning when the rescuer couldn't get back to them in time.  Tragic hero.

Oh I see.  *reading article better*  Or not.  It doesn't really say why or how they ended up riding an inflatable doll down a flooded river.  I was thinking it was an accident.  On the other hand maybe one of them suggested it.  And then the other agreed that, yes, that was a good idea.  "Let's ride an inflatable doll down the river."  "Yeah.  Naked!"   ::)

any significance in doing exactly 5 spins for the laminar flow?

Would it perhaps be better (turn out exactly the same way) if you had a machine spin it at a constant speed rather than a person?

Are they trying to prove determinism with this?

Very interesting.  I had never heard of him.  Thanks for posting.  The best part in the mephisto waltz were the trill leggero sections.  I also liked the opening tempo.  but other then that, I didn't really enjoy it.  He really revelled in the bass, didn't he.  But for me it was too much.  He added double bass octaves everywhere that just made it monotone at times.  what a character.  It also makes me realize just how enslaved we are to the written note.  Maybe he went overboard, though, in that realm.  But I don't think I got the musical idea he had in his head.  Like what he was trying to create.  I bet Beethoven in his later years played like that!
