It makes me sad returning to this piece again, because Tozer's recording is my favorite by far. I love this piece so much.

I like Tozer's recording too. I can see places where he was influenced by Medtner's own recording, but Tozer's is much more elegiac...as if Tozer was living Medtner's life, communicating deeper things than the composer could have allowed - the difference between my telling about myself and my closest lifelong friend telling about me, revealing things which I cannot...and so Tozer's is an extraordinarily selfless endeavor, yet very personal. And Järvi's such an advocate! The orchestral details alone put this above so many other recordings (though the Philharmonia of the late 1940's is about as good as you can get) I totaly get what you said in a previous thread (before I'd heard Tozer's recording), that Tozer's and Medtner's recordings were the only ones needed. I have all the recordings listed on https://www.medtner.org.uk/works.html save Ponti and Nikolaeva (who I'd still like to find), and at best these recordings sound like a good piece of music, but Tozer's is like a song of life.

I'm also looking for the Nikolayeva recording. I have heard the Ponti though, and it is pretty pitiful, as are many of Ponti's recording on Vox-Box's Romantic Piano Concerto series. I also didn't like the Milne broadcast either. I liked his recent set of the fairy tales, though.

I forgot how much I love this piece. I have never heard Tozer's recording but if it is up to par with the rest of his Medtner recordings it must be world-class.

Hmm, maybe I have heard the Nikolayeva already. I have definitely been to that temporary downloads page and have cleaned out the recordings there (tee-hee).

Thanks for uploading this, Chris! I cannot wait to hear it when I get home.

BTW, more and more I think Medtner's own recording with Dobrowen (sp?) and the Philharmonia (released on Testament) is unsurpassed, even with Tozer's modern version (itself being a special case). Medtner is definitely greatly under esteemed as a pianist in history...think of all the pianists featured in the "Great Pianists of the Century" series! Maybe it's because he spent so much time in his own music...but then what great (and still oft neglected) music to spend a life with!
