RIP Alica de Larrocha

Spain's Alicia de Larrocha, a child prodigy who went on to become one of the greatest classical pianists of her generation, has died at the age of 86, a Barcelona hospital said Saturday.
A spokesman for the Quiron hospital, where she was admitted some days ago, said she died from cardiorespiratory failure shortly after 11:00 pm (2100 GMT) on Friday.

Born in Barcelona in 1923, she gave her first recital at age six and made her orchestral debut aged 11.

The last of some 4,000 concerts was in 2003, when she was 80.

She was particularly reknowned for her recordings of composers from her native Spain, such as Enrique Granados and Isaac Albeniz.

She won two Grammys as well Spain's Prince of Asturias award for the arts in 1994.

Married to a pianist, Juan Torra, she was the mother of a son and a daughter.

I saw her perform Iberia years ago. It was an experience I'll never forget, pure magic. The stuff of real music. I heard her a couple of times after that and she was always communicated with the music, it was never superficial. What passion and sensitivity. Her Fantasia Baetica, wow!

I'm saddened to learn of the passing of Alicia de Larrocha.  I recall that back in the 1970s my wife and I were lucky enough to have box seats to one of her performances in the Music Shed at the Tanglewood Music Festival at Lenox, MA.  She played Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by William Steinberg.  Her playing was extraordinary.  She had small hands, but, surprisingly, a wide repertoire.  She'll be very much missed.
